Raw Materials

Wool
The basic material for Nepalese-Tibetan rugs is the wool. The wool is the soul of the rug. Nepalese rug manufacturers depend on wool imported from Tibet and New Zealand because the locally produced wool does not meet the demands of quality. The Tibetan wool is known for its fine quality and softness. This quality wool comes from the flocks of sheep raised in the high Himalayan plateau where the climatic conditions are severely cold. New Zealand wool is consistent with long-stapled, lustrous, resilient Tibetan wool.

Silk
The best quality silk has color consistency. It emits an animal smell while burning and leaves a cocoon-like ash.

Cotton Thread
The best quality cotton threads do not stretch and are very strong.

Looms
The Tibetan Nepalese rug can be woven on any kind of loom. Upright looms can be a simple square consisting of two upright posts framing two horizontal bars, the wrap threads are stretched under tension between two horizontal bars. The elaborate looms made of metal beams are used to make larger rugs. The rolling beams can also be used for a long rug.
